Your Party has been Defeated

It's something of a Square tradition that at some point you will encounter a boss who will wipe your party out without a second thought. In FF III, the final boss uses a "Particle Beam" to do so.

It made me feel sad.

Game over, man. Game over.

Except that love / friendship / the Jews make it all better and you're allowed to fight one last time. This time it will be... well... easy.

I've always been a fan of films in which the bad guy wins. Movies like The Usual Suspects, Legally Blonde*, and Marley and Me** were all tragic in the villain becoming eventually victorious. I know from my dalliances with Anime that this is an interesting theme in Japanese culture. The good guy just doesn't always win. I've always enjoyed this concept, and really hope Square thinks about really enacting it in the future.

It might make the internet explode if there were an immensely entertaining RPG in which the heroes just die in the end and darkness rules. "Sorry, I know you spent eighty hours trying to save the world and all, but you see, the final bad guy had a nuclear bomb, and you lost".

I think there might be suicides.

And they would be hilarious.

*Yes.
** I insist that in Hollywood movies the dog must ALWAYS live. Tom Hanks will still burn in hell for what happened in Turner and Hooch.

NEXT: Final Finalness on FF III.
