First Thoughts on FF IIj

When my wife and I went on our honeymoon, we went to one of those places that seems great on the surface, as our meals were all inclusive, but there was a dark side. Everything else we did seemed to cost money.

Being Tam (like she does), we had to go horseback riding. Sitting all day by the pool drinking free drinks, getting sun in not - too - hot - in December St. Lucia DOES get old, believe it or not. I was actually looking forward to joining her in her favorite past time. So we decide a few days in to go riding. I was excited about the prospect.

For the first hour (those with balls are already laughing), things weren't so bad. We rode through the beautiful countryside and even through a more rural - looking area. The pride of the people in their homes and their island was immense. The beautiful hills were marked by smaller, older houses, many of which were worth the view, and the ride itself was pleasant and fun.

Then the hurting started. Oh. My God. The hurting.

After the ride, aside from my looking like a 1890's gold prospector from the waist down, I found I enjoyed myself. The aura of St. Lucia was as such that the island's themes were a complete lack of worry, and so my muscles (new muscles that I apparently had never used! What a fun surprise!) weren't sore for that long.

Why do I bring up this story aside from another excuse to talk about my crotchal area?

Because it's just like FF IIj. Great anticipation at the change of pace, immense pain and then, a touch of happiness.

The newness of the game comes from an interesting "Ask / Memorize / Item" system. It is interesting in the way that Cokie Roberts finds things interesting. That is, it's not at all interesting, and not at all surprising to anyone paying attention.

This game also marks the first appearance of Cid, who is awesome. It is also the first appearance of not having any money, which is not.

Sadly, having played most of the remaining games, I also know that this is not the last appearance of a ponytail on a dude.

On the continuing saga of "what the fuck were they thinking" after each battle in FFI, the party would cheer. Members of the party would be paralyzed, poisoned, turned to stone or even dead, and the rest of the party would jump up and down in celebration. I know they're celebrating the victory.

BUT.

In FF IIj, this gets even weirder in that they all run off in the end as if they have somewhere to be. Even if their comrade is dead. Even if two are dead. They're leaving him there. They run away from the corpse of their dead friend. Now, I can see doing that in the case of a horrible accident, but that's just weird. WTF, Japan?

Japanese Guy #1: I'm having trouble with the celebration animation, can you help?
Japanese Guy #2: I've looked at it, why not just leave it like before. It's morbid that they seem to be celebrating the victory with a dead teammate, but what else? They should all be sad to be still alive?
Japanese Guy #1: What if they run off - screen?
Japanese Guy #2: And just leave the corpses?
Japanese Guy #1: Yeah, sure, off to the next battle.
Japanese Guy #2: That's cold, dude.

Japanese Guy #1 kills Japanese Guy #2 horrifically

Japanese Guy #1: See, and now look what I'm going to do, motherfucker, I'm going to run away!


That's cold, Japanese Guy #1, just cold. Then again, game developers work terrible hours, so I'm sure the above is not outside of the norm.

On a lighter note, if there is an enemy in your game (I don't care which one or at which point) that yields 3 dollars / Gil / Gilly / Gold, it's not a "battle". It's called "Bumfighting" and it's illegal and disgusting. You're not done programming the game, get back to work.

And thus... murder most foul.
